He was murdered by three of his own men on March 19, 1687. By the mid-1700s, French control in Tennessee was being challenged by the English. In 1750 Thomas Walker led a party of hunters through the Cumberland Gap and began to work his way west; Daniel Boone and others from the new colonies in the east soon moved into the region, too. In 1756-57 the English established Fort Loudoun on the Little Tennessee River just southwest of the Page 12 present city of Knoxville. By the close of the French and Indian War in 1763, the English controlled the entire region.
