The visit was tense, as violence had erupted on MLK, Jr’s previous visit to town for the same reason, and MLK, Jr’s entourage noticed he was more nervous than usual. On April 3, MLK, Jr delivered the following lines in a speech at the Mason Temple: “Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. ” The next day, while standing on the balcony outside room 306 at the Lorraine Motel on the south end of downtown Memphis, a shot rang out that took off half of MLK, Jr’s neck and jaw.

Both the Lorraine Motel and the boarding house from where the shot was allegedly fired are now part of the National Civil Rights Museum. Memphis’ oldest café, Arcade Restaurant, is a block away on S Main St. Munch here – as Elvis Presley once did – on hearty breakfast plates and lunch treats like fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Eating here is like stepping back in time to 1919, when it first opened. Not much has changed since, except, of course, that African Americans and whites are now both welcomed with open arms.

From there, it’s a 4½ hour drive to southwest Mississippi, where Natchez, Mississippi, the oldest civilized settlement on the Mississippi River (beating out New Orleans by two years), stands perched on a bluff. Settled by the French in 1716, it remains a living antebellum museum (when it’s not getting pounded by hurricanes) and boasts more antebellum homes than any other US city. If you can get here during spring and fall pilgrimage, many private residences are open to the public – but there is plenty to do and see here year-round.
