Chanting Down the New Jerusalem: Calypso, Christianity, and by Francio Guadeloupe

By Francio Guadeloupe

In this brilliantly evocative ethnography, Francio Guadeloupe probes the ethos and angle created through radio disc jockeys at the binational Caribbean island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. reading the intersection of Christianity, calypso, and capitalism, Guadeloupe exhibits how a multiethnic and multireligious island kingdom, the place livelihoods rely on tourism, has controlled to inspire all social sessions to go beyond their ethnic and non secular adjustments. In his pathbreaking research, Guadeloupe credit the island DJs, whose formulations of Christian religion, musical creativity, and capitalist survival exhibit traditional people's hopes and fears and advertise tolerance.

England tell them . . you there for me, I ain’t there for you. Is only God know why he bless this place so. God may be the force behind SXM’s rise, but empirically speaking, from my human-centered view, the cause of this rise is a series of fortunate historical events, with SXM benefiting indirectly from the labors of others. The French and Dutch governments longed to remain world players after their terrible humiliations, first at the hands of the Germans during the Second World War, followed by the refusal of their prize colonies, Algeria and Indonesia (respectively), to remain within their fold.

I often heard from Miss Maria and other SXMers that the only way the island’s local police force would deport an illegal was if he or she did not have a job and was a public nuisance. It was rumored that some police officers even went so far as to warn befriended illegal immigrants whenever the authorities of Guadeloupe or Curaçao were planning a raid. Alex, an illegal immigrant from Haiti who had been living in the Dutch Quarter for more that twenty years, corroborated this. It was rumored that, like many successful illegal immigrants, Alex saved diligently and had built a few homes in Haiti as an old-age pension.
